Armoured Reconnaissance

An Armoured Reconnaissance soldier operates and maintains military wheeled or tracked vehicles while acting as an integral part of a three or four man crew. His job is to observe activity within his area of responsibility (AOR) in order to gather information concerning terrain features and enemy strength, composition, equipment, activity, and location(to name just a few). He must be cognizant of the current situation and his higher commanders mission and overall intent since he reports the above information to higher headquarters for analysis by intelligence operators and status updates for the command staff. Due to the sensitivity of the information that is handled in reconnaissance, operational requirements typically require soldiers to be familiar with the use of secure communications equipment and military voice procedure.

Although the primary role of a reconnaissance soldier is to collect information on the enemy without being detected, reconnaissance assets are often included as part of delay and harassing operations against the enemy. Other tasks include foot patrols, traffic control points, nuclear biological and chemical contamination detection. The commander often requires detailed information about specific routes, bridges, and possible axes of advance for friendly forces. Typically, the collection of information on these targets is carried out by teams of anywhere from a section minus (4 soldiers) to a Squadron (over 100 soldiers and officers) dependent on the size and priority of the target.
